20 Oct 1662, Daniel [Neuenschwander] was christened/baptized in the Signau Evang. Ref. Church. He is the son of Christian Neuenschwander and Margretha Stauffer.

Witnesses: Andreas Stauffer, Peter Salltzman, and Babi Neuenschwander.

What's Behind the Name?

.The word Neuenschwand means a place where the forest was recently cleared for farming. Adding the 'er' references a person from or of Neuenschwand.

A 'Schwand' in the German-Swiss dialect is a forest area which has been "thinned out" or causing the forest area to "disappear". Thus, the cutting of trees and rooting out the stumps leaving cleared fields and pasture lands. Around the years 1200 to 1300, numerous area had been cleared. Later a newly cleared area received the name of "Neuen-Schwand" or new clearing. People who lived in Neuen-Schwand were called Neuenschwander. The surname is a mark of origin and is connected in every case with the village of "Neuenschwand" near "Eggiwil."
