Christian and Margaretha Neuenschwander (8th ggparents)

Christian Neuenschwander was born about 1625 in Signau, Bern Canton, Switzerland. He married Margaretha Stauffer, born about 1628, also of Signau. They were married 5 Nov 1655 in Signau, very possibly in the church I visited and took photos of (posted in this blog at the bottom).

Vanola Wittwer, sisters and family, were instrumental in hiring a researcher to locate the names of these grandparents as well as their children. However, two children were missed: Daniel and Catharina. These two children have been added to the family and the children are listed in order. All records were found in the Signau Church books.

  1. Hi, We are traveling to Thun, Switzerland in Sept. 2016 to work on Neuenschwander family genealogy. I am having lots of problems finding our family. I know that my husband's greatgrandparents were Gottfried and Rosina (Liechti) Neuenschwandere, born 1869 and 1873 in the canton of Bern. They died in Thun, Switzerland. Gottfried's parents, according to records, were J. Ulrich Neuenschwander and Maria Andres, of Signau, Bern, Switzerland. Could someone please guide me to what I should do next for research? I don't know how to trace back without more info. Thanks for any help possible. Sincerely, Sue Neuenschwander susan.neuenschwander9@gmail.com

  2. One of the towns the N. Come from is Signau. They have a Bethlehem system, or so I call it, where no matter where they live they are still a part of their hometown so all records go back to there. The records should be in Signau.

Now for the cool part. These records are online. They have not been indexed so it will be work but they are there and fairly good writing usually.

To locate go to familysearch.org, log in, click on Search, catalog, type in the place box: Switzerland, Bern, Signau. Select church records then see "click here" to view online. Select Bern Canton if necessary then the village and you will be in heaven.
